Blizzard Entertainment is denying a statement by game director Tom Chilton about their current subscriber list. Earlier this year Polish magazine Pixel quotes Chilton as stating “As we speak, there is around 10.1 million subscribers(to World of Warcraft).”
However back in November 2015 when their Subscriber list sat around 5 million, Blizzard stopped reporting their monthly sub list stating “there are other metrics that are better indicators of the overall Blizzard business performance.”
Blizzard at this point is denying that this statement was ever made or was mistaken in the way it was said. Stating “This was a misquote or some kind of misunderstanding on the part of the journalist,” a Blizzard rep went on to say “ Our policy for almost a year now is that we do not talk about subscriber numbers and Tom did not do that with this publication.”
While there is no for sure way to tell if Chilton actually stated this with Pixel or if the journalist took some liberties with their article. What is known is that with the launch of Legion and The Warcraft Movie, people are heaping back to Azoroth. With 3.3 Million Legion copies sold on day one many old and new users are testing the waters of this long standing artwork that is World Of Warcraft.
The question is will this boost to numbers bring the game back to full life or will the surge subside as days go by. What do you think? Do you play World of Warcraft? Let me know.
